Modern Street Dressing – Bin there done that!

What do bollards, litter bins, and lamp posts all have in common?…

…they’re all used for set dressing an exterior scene and sometimes used by dogs! In this blog post we will explore all things modern street dressing. Typically thought as the dullest area of set design, we’re here to show you they can be the most important part of a shot by busying up a set and background that fits the location.

Why do we think street dressing is so important?

Street furniture can enhance any exterior set, even though they’re not meant to bring attention to themselves but to hangout in the background of a set.  It can make a once empty shot tell a story and identify a particular location, time and place.

Are you looking to connect your audience to a modern British exterior set? Our wooden park benches, black Council bins and street lamps will make audiences feel the show happened down the street from their house or in their town, as there’s a familiarity in the design of the bins and benches dotted across the UK.

Stockyard North has provided street dressing to various productions, such as Alma’s Not Normal, Brassic and Starve Acre. Street dressing provides the audience subconscious clues about the scene, situation or character, helping a story come to life!

We equip a wide variety of modern street dressing, from red telephone boxes, wheelie bins and construction signs. From an array of metal and wooden benches, to a large collection of litter bins in all different colours and shapes. Our red telephone box in particular has gained quite a popularity in the past year. With its working door and simple interior, it’s great for set dressing with a local bus timetable or a missing pet poster.

How do you choose the right street furniture for your set?

Choosing the right outdoor bin or bench might not seem like a big decision at first glance, but it can have a lasting impact on how a scene comes across. Whether you’re creating a messy or tidy outdoor space. Getting the right balance between function, size, material, and design can make all the difference.

Take a bin for example, the first aspect to think about is choosing the right size, is the bin for a public area? What’s the estimate volume of traffic in this area? Think about the materials and durability; since the bin is outdoors, what climate and weather has it been exposed to? For example, sun, snow, rain or wind. Our plastic bins are popular because they’re lightweight and durable. As well, our metal bins that can withstand a lot of wear and tear especially if knocked over. Lastly, the design and colour of your bin can’t be overlooked, whether you go for a sleek design, vibrant, or muted colour.
