In case you’re not familiar with shatter glass, also known as sugar glass or breakaway glass, let us give you a quick explanation.
Shatter glass is a product used in the TV and film industry for dramatic stunts. It can double as glass or ceramic, but is less likely to cause injury or harm to actors and crews on set.

There’s nothing that adds a bit more drama to an intense scene, like a smashing bottle or window pane.
Imagine, two rival gangs finally meet up after weeks and weeks of build-up. Then, finally, the big show-down scene commences. A few glass bottles over the head, someone being thrown through a window pane, they all add to the intense spectacle. But how to do it safely? How do you keep your actors and stuntmen safe, with a relatively low risk factor?
This is where the magic of sugar glass or breakaway bottles comes in.

Different Types Of Shatter Glass

Sugar glass
Sugar glass is the more traditional method of making stunt glass. Mix together sugar, corn syrup and water and heating to 150°C. Then mould into all sorts of shapes, but sugar glass does need to be used quickly as it softens over time.

Breakaway resin
Breakaway resin is more commonly used for stunt glass these days. The resin is very brittle when solid and has a much longer shelf-life than traditional sugar glass. It can even hold liquids, so it’s perfect for your typical pub bar brawl or similar setting.

Where Is Shatter Glass Used?

Shatter glass has uses in a range of scenarios, it can be shaped and moulded into doubles for all sorts of objects. Some of the most common items made from stunt glass include:
Beer bottles
Wine bottles
Window panes
